If you think it wont work, could you recommend another cage like it in the same price range?

If it will work, how many rats could it hold comfortably?

Midwest makes a Critter Nation as well. http://www.ferret.com/item/critter-nation-small-animal-cage-double-unit/650232/

Read the info at the bottom and you will see it is more suitable for rats and such. Very similar to the Ferret Nation, just more small animal friendly!

I love ferret.com for all my ferret stuff, and they carry the Critter Nation. They are generally cheaper than anywhere else I have found.

Hope this helps and good luck!
